WONDER WHEEL Opening Weekend Box Office

Wonder Wheel, the latest film written and directed by Woody Allen, is out now in select theatres. We have a box office report for the new film. As usual, Box Office Mojo is the best industry source.

Wonder Wheel has earned $140,555 in five theatres. The PTA (per theatre average) was $28,111.

This puts it as technically the worse performing opening weekend for Allen in the last decade (since 2004’s Melinda And Melinda). However, many of those opening weekends had more theatres. Wonder Wheel is ahead of 2015’s Irrational Man, 2010’s You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger and 2007’s Cassandra’s Dream. But it is less than half of last year’s Café Society.

The box office is no doubt affected by the December release date. Allen’s last decade of films usually open in the summer, countering the CGI blockbusters. This year, it is up against a big week of specialty releases – The Disaster Artist, The Shape Of Water and Call Me By Your Name are all competing. Oddly, Wonder Wheel also faces competition from another Kate Winslet film, a 20th Anniversary re-release of Titanic.

In the US, Wonder Wheel will be looking to better Irrational Man’s $4.0m, and 2009’s Whatever Work’s $5.3m.

What we don’t know is how the December release will affect Allen’s all important international box office. Again, it would be looking to beat Irrational Man’s $27.4m, and aim for Whatever Work’s $35.1m.

Wonder Wheel opens in more US cities in the next few weeks. Find all the international release dates here.

  1. Hello and congratulations on your wonderful site.

Could it be that the recent torrent of social media comments and articles in major magazines (New Yorker, The Hollywood Reporter, even The Paris Review(!)) against him might have damaged the film’s box office chances? And why do these allegations keep showing up anyway? Now people are even comparing him with the likes of Polanski, Harvey Weinstein or Bill Cosby! I can’t even imagine what they are going to say when his next film – in which “44-year-old actor Jude Law allegedly has a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old concubine played by Elle Fanning” – comes out! As a longtime fan, I find this very, very sad and even infuriating.

(sorry for the rant, this was supposed to be a simple question…)

    1. Maybe some, but not notably. I think worst for the film is The Disaster Artist and Call Me By Your Name, where the indie film dollar is going. And the critics aren’t fawning over this one.

I’d like to think people recognise hate-bait. And those that don’t would never see a Woody Allen film anyway.

  2. Less than $2,500,00 in France, according to Boxofficemojo.com. Surely one of Woody Allen’s worst showings there in the last 20 years?…
