The book has a long history. Allen had started writing in the early 00s but a book never materialised. He had talked about writing this book in interviews ever since. It finally overcame its last hurdle of the cowering publisher Hachette, to be released.

There appears to be some differences between the version Hachette were set to publish and the version released today. Firstly, the cover is rejigged with a different but still very bare design. Second, Allen has written a new postscript about Hachette. Here’s part of it:

“Hachette read the book and loved it and despite me being a toxic pariah and menace to society, they vowed to stand firm should things hit the fan. When actual flak did arrive they thoughtfully reassessed their position, concluding that perhaps courage was not the virtue it was cracked up to be and there was a lot to be said for cowering.”

Arcade editor Jeannette Seaver said:

“In this strange time, when truth is too often dismissed as ‘fake news,’ we as publishers prefer to give voice to a respected artist, rather than bow to those determined to silence him.”

People are already writing about the significant revelations in the book. We’ll have a lot more to say about that in the coming days.

To Hachette – Be fruitful and multiply, but not in those words.

And here’s the hardcover in the wild.

  1. I love the cover of the hardbound edition!!! With the black background and white font it hearkens back to Woody’s old school paperback covers of Getting Even and Side Effects. Perhaps this is Woody’s cheeky way of “getting even” with those who have deliberately created a big bag of pointless BS against him!!! Without doubt this is Woody’s coup d’etat over the malicious media that continues to ignore the facts; and Woody’s coup de grace by finally putting the nail in the coffin of this BS witch-hunt against a man that has been proven innocent!!!

And for Woody’s forthcoming 4K bluray releases we need a Bob Weide commentary on each of Woody’s films!!! Folks let’s make it happen!!!

GO WOODY!!!! KEEP ON TRUCKIN’ BROTHER!!!!!

    1. Is there any additional info on the forthcoming 4k Blu-ray releases? I tried a few online searches, but I wasn’t able to find anything.

  2. Thank you all for making it possible for Woody Allen’s memoir, Apropos of Nothing’ to be published in America!!!!

I ordered it from Amazon in hardback on March 2, 2020 and now can look forward to receiving a copy in early April.

    ‘War Eagle’!

  3. I just ordered mine! Very happy news in a bleak time. Also rewatched Rainy Day (dvd via eBay): delightful.

  4. I’m a huge Woody Allen fan. Woody’s films make life better. He’s the greatest artist, and the coolest. Woody has been a victim of a false accusation (an accusation that back in 1992 was throughly investigated by 2 teams of experts that arrived to the same conclusion: Woody was innocent), but, since the world is upside down, Woody’s art suffered too the lynching of the mob, the ignorant, and the stupid. This false accusation was re-opened in 2018 and followed a shower of McCarthyism and surrealist censorship of Woody’s art. So, in 2018, me and millions of other Woody Allen fans around the world were robbed of the pleasure of watching our yearly Woody Allen film. Some weeks ago Hachette (who was going to publish Woody’s memoir) showed a huge degree of cowardice and unprofessionalism and stepped back. Now, finally, Arcade has the honor of being Woody’s publisher. About Woody’s memoir, Arcade writes: “The book is a candid and comprehensive personal account by Woody Allen of his life, ranging from his childhood in Brooklyn through his acclaimed career in film, theater, television, print and standup comedy, as well as exploring his relationships with family and friends.” Well, I can’t wait to read it! Woody is one of the greatest writers in the world, so this book will be amazing. Thanks, Woody. Thanks, Arcade. We love, support and admire Woody Allen. With gratitude and admiration from Spain / Antonia

  5. I bought a copy via Apple Books (US), and was disappointed it hasn’t included the postscript chapter on the whole Hachette situation. Can anyone confirm that this chapter is included with the Kindle edition?

    1. I bought a Barnes & Noble NOOK ebook, and I don’t see any postscript either. Curious why this is missing from both Apple and B&N editions. Does anyone else out there have any more information about this?
