Annie Hall Tops Nine Woody Allen Entries In 2017 TSPDT Top 1000 Films List

We always love when They Shoot Pictures Don’t They unveil their latest Top 1000 films list. Compiled every year from many reputed sources, they collect various greatest film lists into THE greatest films list. It’s a great resource, and there’s always more films to add to your watch list once you go through it.

Here are the films that are considered Woody’s best. We’ve also compiled the rankings from the last several years.

6 of Allen’s films made the unordered 1001-2000 list. They are

Husbands And Wives (1992)
Interiors (1978)
Match Point (2005)
Radio Days (1987)
Sleeper (1973)
Take The Money And Run (1969)

Allen also ranked #29 in their Greatest Directors poll, down two spots from #27 in 2016.

Interesting that Love And Death is on the list for the first time in many years. Annie Hall remains one of the 100 Greatest Films of all time – and it celebrates 40 years this year. Manhattan remains close to cracking that Top 100. If for some reason you’re on this site and you haven’t seen these 9 (or 15 films), you really should get cracking. You’ll love them.

TSPDT do another wonderful list for the 21st Century’s Most Acclaimed Films. Released in March, four Allen films made the list last year (Match Point, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Midnight In Paris and Blue Jasmine). We’ll see how Allen fares this year.

Check out the amazing TSPDT site, and explore so many great films.

What do you think of the list? We’ve been considering doing a Woody Allen Pages poll of our readers for the best Allen film, maybe for March Madness. Would fan-favourites be different?

  1. How’bout some love for the films Woody made from 1995 – 2005. Some people might consider this decade Woody’s dry period. But f you look closer, Mighty Aphrodite, Deconstructing Harry, Celebrity, Small Time Crooks, Hollywood Ending, Anything Else, and even Curse of the Jade Scorpion are all deserving of praise. Even Everyone Says I Love You was Woody putting himself out there to make the best musical he could for what he was feeling in his life at that time. These films might not have done very much box office, but you get them home, and watch them, and suddenly you realize they possess tremendous redeeming emotional value. For example, in Anything Else Jerry Falk turns to the camera, and with a quizzical expression states, “I can’t believe I’m in love with a smoker.” A statement so simple, yet so profound. The profundity. The irony. Its amazing. I had that exact same thought ten years earlier when I was in college. This is great stuff folks. Its just great stuff!!!!

    GO WOODY!!!!

    1. Ive been thinking about doing decade by decade polls or something. Be interesting to see what people think are the best of the 90s stuff for example.
