VOTW: Manhattan Opening Sequence – Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit the east coast of the America this week, devastating the country. Some of the most startling images were from Manhattan – the subways underwater, that crane hanging perilously, and rescue workers doing what they can.

Woody Allen will be forever tied to New York. And his vision of Manhattan is one of the most vivid in all popular culture. A lot of that is summed up in the opening sequence to his film Manhattan – the wonderfully shot sequence with cinematography by Gordon Willis, the definitive version of George Gershwin‘s ‘Rhapsody In Blue‘, and Allen’s own iconic, rambling narration.

As New York, and America, deals with this latest disaster, we wanted to relive Manhattan at her prettiest, and maybe her best. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
