Café Society French Box Office, First Reviews Round Up

008

It’s been a week since Café Society opened in France and at the Cannes Film Festival. We now have a box office update from there, as well as a settled score on various critic sites now that the film is out.

So far, the film has earned $2,272,516 (in France and French speaking Switzerland). It is tracking ahead of last year’s Irrational Man’s first weekend in France, but slightly under 2014’s Magic In the Moonlight (which was filmed in France).

As for critics, Rotten Tomatoes has Café Society at 74%, IMDB 7.3 and Metacritic at 68%.

This compares to Irrational Man (RT 45%, IMDB 6.6, MC 53%) and Magic In the Moonlight (RT 52%, IMDB 6.6, MC 54%). As usual, it seems the European critics are far more behind the film than the American ones.

It’s a strong start for Allen, his strongest since 2013’s Blue Jasmine, especially when it comes to the critics.

The film plays Seattle Film Festival today, and opens in the US on 15th July. Here’s the US Café Society trailer.
