Our video of the week is a vintage interview from 1965, when Allen was deep in the stand up circuit. He has just made his first venture into film – writing the screenplay for What’s New Pussycat? This is before Woody Allem started answering every question with a joke, and he is surprisingly frank and honest (we think?).

Highlights is Allen talking about making compromises in “…Pussycat“. Working to please other actors, doing rewrites – you can see the glimmer of the idea of getting that full creative control, which he would get in four years, and keep for four decades.

It’s always fun to see these old videos, a Woody Allen at another time. Yet his speaking mannerisms remain intact – something he developed early and has never lost.
