New WONDER WHEEL Story + Distribution Details

Wonder Wheel is the upcoming film written and directed by Woody Allen. Distributed by the ever evolving Amazon, new details emerged today about both the story and how the film will be released. Variety had the scoop.

Variety, an industry rag, focusses on the new Amazon distribution model. Previously the tech giant relied on exiting distributors to help get their films into traditional cinemas (Allen’s last film, Café Society, was distributed by Lionsgate).

More interesting for us is new story details, as follows (very minor spoilers):

The movie is set in Coney Island in the 1950s. It follows a lifeguard (Justin Timberlake) who tells the story of a middle-aged carousel operator (Jim Belushi) and his beleaguered wife (Kate Winslet). The couple are visited by their estranged daughter (Juno Temple), which sets the plot in motion.

That’s the first time we’ve heard about the character relationships – that Winslet and Belushi are a couple, Timberlake is a narrator and Temple is Winslet’s daughter.

Wonder Wheel will premiere in October at the New York Film Festival. We will likely get a lot more information in the coming weeks about the new film.

  1. When I first read this post I read an interview with the author of a new biography coming out this October. Now I
Can not find it in this most recent W.A. Post. It showed that it could be found on Amazon.com in England. Not true.

    1. Are you talking about the upcoming Eric Lax book? We’ve not written that up yet. Waiting for more details.

      1. Thank you for your quick response. But the book I thought I read about was written by an Englishman. I guess I will just keep looking for it.

  3. Pretty sure that’s just a misinterpretation of the synopsis in the NYFF press release: https://www.filmlinc.org/nyff2017/daily/woody-allens-wonder-wheel-will-close-nyff55/

“A lifeguard (Justin Timberlake) tells us a story that just might be filtered through his vivid imagination: a middle-aged carousel operator (James Belushi) and his beleaguered wife (Kate Winslet), who eke out a living on the boardwalk, are visited by his estranged daughter (Juno Temple)”

    “HIS estranged daughter.”
